Cepheus Q.

Private tutor in Manila, Philippines

Education

In college, I took up Bachelor of Arts (AB), Major in English/Sociology in Columban College from 1982-1986. Then I continued my studies to the graduate level where I took up Master in Business Management (MM) at the University of the Philippines Extension Program in Olongapo City (UPEPO) from 1998-2001. I am currently studying law (Juris Doctor) at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

Experience

I am a former college educator (associate professor) who now works as a Consultant at the Batasang Pambansa (House of Representatives). I still tutors on the side though. I have been tutoring students privately for about 10 years now. In addition, I conduct campus journalism seminars and workshops for the Philippine Department of Education, where I often serve as a lecturer or journalism contest judge. In connection with this, I am a Lopez Jaena Journalism Fellow at the University of the Philippines Diliman and an active member of the Philippine Association of Communication Educators (PACE). When I was doing my college studies, I was the Editor-in-Chief of our College organ. Additionally, I was the Corps Commander of the Columban College ROTC Unit. Furthermore, I passed the Philippine Career Service Examination-Professional Level, with a score of 92.97%. I took up my apprenticeship (maintenance electrician) at the former U.S. Naval Base in Subic Bay, Philippines in 1979. After graduation, I decided to become a computer specialist at the Data Processing Service Center, also in Subic. I started as a programming trainee until I became a computer specialist. I served on-base for about 17 years where I learned to speak and write in American English almost like a native speaker. In 1981, I and a co-worker was awarded with the 2nd highest Beneficial Suggestion Award with a monetary award of USD $1,000, which we shared equally. It was also in Subic Bay where I won 1st Prize in an impromptu or on-the-spot speech tournament sponsored by the University of Maryland (UM) Extension on 12 September 1985. I was awarded USD $100 in U.S. Savings Bond in that competition. I have written two eBooks and am working on a third, i.e., our clan's history. I am currently a registered Author/Writer as approved by the National Book Development Board (NBDB) under Registration No. 2015-0929. Recently, I won 1st Prize with a PhP 3,000 award money in CANVAS’ 3-Sentence Story Contest, Art Fair 2016 Philippines 2016 Edition. My Winning piece is “Liwanag at Dilim,” as inspired by Abi Goy’s painting “Call of the Wild.” I have completed two (2) foreign training in computers: Computer Systems Contingency Test/Training at the US Naval Station, Agana, Guam, M.I. and the Naval Flight Record Sub-system Training at NAS Miramar, San Diego, California, U.S.A.
