Experience

Experience TEACHING EXPERIENCE English Academic Consultant for elementary, high school and college students, and adults, MSA Tutorial and Review Center (2011 – 2012) ESL English Teacher, Pomic Manila (2009 – 2011) Kindergarten Teacher (2006 – 2007; 2008 – 2012) PROFILE AND AREAS THAT I CAN TEACH I’m taking Master’s Degree in English Studies: Anglo-American Literature, and I’m currently working on my thesis. I enjoy poetry, fiction (novel), non-fiction (like memoir and essays), journal articles, even newspaper articles. Basically, everything with words! Here are the forms or genres that I can teach: POETRY I’ve studied early poetry such as Beowulf, Milton’s Paradise Lost, and Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. American poetry such as Whitman, Dickinson, Bishop, Sexton, among others. English poetry such as Shakespeare’s Sonnets, John Donne, Ben Jonson, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Keats, WB Yeats, Hardy, Plath, Seamus Heaney, Carol Ann Duffy, among others. NOVEL I can teach American novels such as those of Melville, Faulkner, Ralph Ellison, Nabokov, Toni Morrison, Delillo among others. English novels such as those of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Charlotte and Emily Bronte, Thomas Hardy, Virginia Woolf, George Orwell, Salman Rushdie, Ian McEwan, Julian Barnes among others. DRAMA I can teach Shakespearean drama. Also, American drama such as Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams, David Mamet, Ntozake Shange, among others. PHILIPPINE LITERATURE IN ENGLISH I‘ve studied works by Filipinos written in English, for example, those written by Paz Benitez Marquez, Jose Garcia Villa, NVM Gonzales, Nick Joaquin, F. Sionil Jose, etc. LITERARY CRITICISM I also have a background on literary theories especially structuralism, post-structuralism, Marxism, and post-colonialism. I’m especially comfortable with them when applied appropriately to literary works. GENERALLY, ALL KINDS OF TEXT Since my concentration is Literature, in principle, I deal with all kinds of written work. Therefore, I can help you with any kind such as articles, essays, letters, short stories, scientific, technical, opinion or personal papers. IMPROVING READING SKILLS Dealing with any written work is, essentially, about reading skills. Hence, the key is, really, practicing and enhancing your reading abilities. Therefore, as a teacher, improving your reading skills is one of my key goals. I can teach you about the organization of texts, reading tips and strategies like extensive and intensive reading, structure-proposition-evaluation, skimming and scanning. WRITING OR COMPOSITION I enjoy writing. I write essays, both personal and school papers. Throughout my life as a student (both college and graduate), I’ve written so many papers. Therefore, I’ve had so much practice. I consider myself skilled in writing, and also, in teaching how to write well. ENGLISH LANGUAGE (ESL) I’ve been an English teacher/tutor for four years; two years of this duration, I’ve devoted to teaching Koreans in individualized instruction (on the phone). I enjoyed it throughout the time. WHY I TEACH/TUTOR I enjoy teaching. I’ve taught across age groups: children for four years (I was a preschool teacher), elementary and high school students for two years, and adults (ESL for Koreans, English enhancement for Filipinos taking IELTS) for two years. Therefore, I’ve had plenty of experience, and I consider myself a patient and methodical teacher. I plan to continue teaching, particularly, literature to high school and college students. HOW I TEACH I believe in dialogue, conversation or discussion as a way to learn. Of course, this is a special kind of dialogue because it is purposeful, that is, it is geared toward your learning. In the conversation, we’ll talk about the things that you know first. As we go along, I’ll enrich what you know with the other important things that you need to know. Throughout the time, you’re free to react, ask questions, share your feelings. Then, we’ll apply all the insights and realizations we gather to your target text/material – all along, I’ll be there to guide you. In other words, we’ll make learning feel natural, easy, and of course, fun. This is the method, generally. This comes from my belief that students have stored knowledge and thinking skills already, which they've been developing in life. As their teacher, my role is to help them remember this knowledge, then, enhance and enrich it, add to it, and refine it. Of course, there is so much to learn, but I consider lessons as addition or enhancement to what the students know and can know. Importantly, my aim is teaching thinking skills. I believe that when you have practiced thinking skills, you can read, understand and write anything! LANGUAGES I’m proficient in English and Filipino, particularly Tagalog; hence, I can teach in both languages.
